Some New Species Discovered 2026

Blob-headed fish":
This unusual fish, with a prominent blob-like head, was found during an expedition in Peru's Alto Mayo landscape. 
"Big Boy" spider:
A new species of funnel web spider, Atrax christenseni, nicknamed "Big Boy", was discovered near Newcastle, New South Wales. 
Velvet worm:
The discovery of Peripatopsis barnardi in the Karoo indicates a potential shift in the region's ecosystem. 
New viruses:
Scientists identified two viruses in bats in China that are closely related to Nipah and Hendra, raising concerns about potential pandemics. 
Other discoveries:
The year also brought new species of sea squirts, bees, fish, lizards, frogs, sharks, geckos, stick insects, crabs, fungi, and hummingbirds. 
Killer whales:
