Hellclipse

The jagged ribs of the Hellclipse site still leaked a sickly, phosphorescent ooze into the dead soil, but Edris brought the grim truth to light beneath the ash-choked sky: Malum’s black-hearted chest—the abyssal reliquary binding his essence to this wretched earth—had not been destroyed. It remained entombed within the crater's deepest, weeping wound, pulsing with a wet, rhythmic heartbeat that sickened the soul.

Seeking respite before their final descent into the abyss, the weary band dragged themselves to a makeshift survivors’ camp nestled within a canyon of bleached stone. Lanterns guttered in the toxic wind, casting long, frantic shadows against tents stitched from leather and scavenged canvas. Dong tended to the sputtering cookfire while Drea silently sharpened a notched machete, the metallic rasp echoing the mounting dread in their chests.

They never heard the approach.

The night was torn apart by a wet, sickening crunch as barbed bone spikes erupted through the canvas walls, instantly skewering Dong mid-breath. Blood sprayed in a hot, dark mist across the embers, his lifeless eyes locked in a silent scream. Before Drea could raise her blade, a towering mass of corded muscle and glistening, flayed skin descended upon her—Malum’s primary executioner. With a sickening wrench of bone and sinew, Drea was torn clean in two, spilling her steaming viscera across the dirt as frantic gunfire from the remaining survivors died out in gurgling whimpers.

Out of the obsidian shadows stepped Malum himself, draped in the dripping hides of his victims, a towering monument of malice surrounded by a horde of feral aswangs. Their jaws unhinged with unnatural elasticity, dripping with black venom as they lunged.

Rosdan and Riel fought back-to-back, blades flashing in the strobing moonlight as aswangs swarmed them. Claws sheared through leather and bit deep into flesh, tearing ragged strips of muscle from Rosdan’s shoulder. Riel, bleeding profusely from a jagged slash across his torso, was tackled to the earth by a pair of screeching fiends.

Desperate, Riel drove his own forearm across a jagged stone, tearing open a deep garter vein to let his lifeblood pump freely. As the ravenous aswangs bit into his flesh, their jaws instantly locked in agonizing spasms. The moment their fangs breached his circulatory system, black steam hissed from their maws. Riel’s blood burned like holy vitriol within their veins, dissolving their internal organs into boiling black sludge. The monsters shrieked, clawing at their own throats as they dissolved into pools of blistering, smoking grease.

Seeing his opening, Malum lunged forward with a rusted, jagged-toothed glaive, driving it straight through Riel’s chest. The blade punched out through Riel’s back in a spray of bright arterial blood and shattered bone.

Spitting crimson, Riel seized the shaft of the weapon embedded in his lungs, locking his gaze with Malum and grinning through a froth of blood. With his free hand, Riel drove a silver-plated dagger deep into Malum’s exposed throat.

Malum roared, recoiling as Riel’s tainted, volatile blood pumped from the wound and soaked into the dark entity's flesh. The ancient evil began to calcify and crack, screaming in a voice that shattered the surrounding rocks as Riel’s sacrifice poisoned his immortal core.

"Now, Rosdan! Finish it!" Riel choked out, his body going limp as Malum dropped him into the mud.

Seizing the momentum of his fallen brother's sacrifice, Rosdan roared through his tears and charged. He brought his heavy broadsword down with terrifying force, burying the blade squarely into Malum’s rotting skull. The dark warlord let out one final, deafening shriek before shattering into a billion shards of black glass, taking the remaining aswangs with him in a shockwave of collapsing ash.

Silence reclaimed the decimated camp, broken only by the crackle of dying flames and the rhythmic dripping of blood. Rosdan fell to his knees beside Riel’s mutilated body, cradling his brother’s cold head as crimson tears carved clean paths through the soot on his face.

After a long, agonizing silence, Rosdan rose. His eyes were hollow, stripped of all fear, leaving only an absolute, lethal resolve. Shouldering his pack and wiping the gore from his blade, Rosdan met Edris's solemn gaze. Together, they turned their backs on the massacre and stepped out into the dark, marching toward the Hellclipse to seal Malum’s chest once and for all.
