Handle With Care

The Package

It was a cold, gray evening when Marcus found the package sitting on his doorstep. It was unlike anything he had ever seen. Long, coffin-like, and extremely heavy, the crate was covered in faded red letters that read “Handle with Care”. No return address, no name—just that ominous warning plastered all over it.

Curiosity and dread mixed inside Marcus as he dragged the package into his dimly lit living room. The wood felt cold and rough beneath his fingertips. Every step seemed heavier than the last. He wondered who could have sent such a thing and why it was left at his door.

Unwrapping the Mystery

Marcus hesitated but then grabbed a small knife and pried open the crate’s lid. The scent that escaped was thick and metallic, like rust and something far older. Inside, wrapped in a dusty black cloth, lay an object that looked like a carved wooden box, sealed with strange symbols. His heartbeat quickened as he reached to touch it.

Suddenly, the room temperature dropped. Shadows seemed to flicker and stretch, twisting against the walls. Marcus felt a whisper in the silence—a voice just beyond hearing, calling his name. The warning on the package echoed in his mind: Handle with care.

The Haunting Unfolds

That night, Marcus couldn’t sleep. Every creak and groan of the house sounded like footsteps. The box seemed to pulse with a life of its own. When he tried to move it, he found it impossibly heavy, as if something inside resisted.

Visions invaded his dreams—dark figures, cold hands reaching out, endless corridors that led nowhere. Each morning, the box seemed closer to the edge of the room, as if it was creeping toward him.

The Final Revelation

Driven by fear and desperation, Marcus called a local historian, hoping to understand the symbols. The historian’s face paled when he saw the box. “This is a prison,” he whispered. “A vessel meant to trap something ancient and malevolent. It should never have been opened.”

As the words sank in, the room grew darker, colder. The shadows erupted into a form—a twisted, desperate thing clawing its way out. Marcus stumbled back, heart pounding, as the box shattered, releasing a chilling scream that echoed through the night.

When dawn finally broke, the package was gone. Only Marcus remained, trembling and forever changed, haunted by the knowledge that some things are best left untouched and some warnings must never be ignored.
